Course Overview
The NCTI Telephone Home Wiring course teaches technicians the precision skills required to install and troubleshoot the hardware associated with an in-home telephone system. While many view phone wiring as simple, improper termination is a leading cause of service failure.
This course moves beyond basic connections to cover professional Structured Cabling standards. Technicians are introduced to inside wiring topologies, cable configurations, and the critical TIA/EIA Standards (including 568A and 568B) that govern the industry. Students will master the use of twisted-pair test equipment to identify shorts, crosses, and open circuits, ensuring they can solve telephony-related issues within the premises quickly and accurately.
Who Should Attend:
- Telecom Installers
- Broadband Technicians
- Structured Cabling Apprentices
- Technicians preparing for SCTE BPI Certification
What You Will Learn
Upon completion, students will be able to terminate modular plugs to industry standards, identify wiring errors, and use professional test sets to certify the line.
Core Competencies:
- Wiring Standards: Explain the purpose of the ANSI/TIA/EIA-570B Residential Infrastructure Standard and differentiate between untwisted and twisted-pair applications.
- Termination Mastery: Install modular plugs and jacks using T568A and T568B wiring configurations, mastering the standard color codes.
- Topologies: Describe common wiring topologies (Home Run vs. Daisy Chain) and their impact on signal quality.
- Troubleshooting: Identify the characteristics of Shorts, Crosses, and Open Circuits, and describe the three types of twisted-pair wiring errors.
- Test Equipment: Use a Tone Generator and inductive amplifier probe to trace conductors, and utilize a wiremap tester to verify circuit integrity.
- Hardware: Identify the function of the Network Interface Device (NID) and various interface devices within the home.
Certification and Benefits
Reduce Repeat Service Calls
By training technicians on the physics and standards of wiring, companies can significantly reduce trouble calls caused by poor termination or incorrect topology.
Additional Benefits:
- SCTE Prep: Excellent preparation for the SCTE Broadband Premises Installer (BPI) certification.
- Certification Path: Credits apply toward the NCTI Telecom Specialist certification.
- Industry Recognition: Receive the NCTI Certificate of Graduation.
