Course Overview

The NCTI Electrical Safety for Telecommunications Workers course is specialized training designed for the unique risks found in broadband and telecom environments.

Unlike general construction, telecom technicians often work in hybrid environments—sharing space with high-voltage utility lines on poles or managing massive DC battery banks in central offices. This course equips personnel working at 50 volts and above with the knowledge to recognize and prevent Electrical Shock, Arc Flash, and Arc Blast.

From overhead line construction (pole climbers and bucket truck operators) to inside plant installations, students will master OSHA regulations specific to the industry. The curriculum focuses on practical mitigation strategies, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), proper PPE selection, and adherence to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.

Who Should Attend:

  • Overhead Line Workers (Climbers & Bucket Truck)
  • Inside Plant/Central Office Technicians
  • Field Supervisors & Safety Managers
  • Personnel working near power substations

What You Will Learn

Upon completion, students will be able to identify electrical hazards in both AC and DC applications and execute safe work procedures to prevent injury or fatality.

Core Competencies:

  • The “Big Three” Hazards: Identify the major factors that contribute to Electrical Shock, Arc Flash, and Arc Blast.
  • Telecom Specifics: Recognize hazards associated with DC Battery Systems and backup power, including proper handling and storage.
  • Protective Gear: Describe the types and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for arc flash, as well as the maintenance of Fall Protection and climbing gear.
  • Tools & Detection: Explain the safety benefits of insulated tools, live-line tools, and using energy detection devices before touching equipment.
  • Safe Protocols: Identify essential protocols for non-energized circuits, standby generators, and establishing safe clearances.
  • Grounding & Bonding: Explain key features of grounding systems to ensure equipment and personnel protection.

Certification and Benefits

Compliance for the Telecom Industry

This course ensures your workforce meets OSHA training requirements, protecting both the employee from injury and the organization from liability.

Additional Benefits:

  • Industry Recognition: Receive the NCTI Certificate of Graduation.
  • Hazard Mitigation: Learn strategies to work safely around both AC utility power and DC plant power.
  • Flexible Learning: A comprehensive 4-hour safety module available online for up to four months.
