Course Overview
The NCTI Fiber-Optic Fundamentals II course moves from theory to the toolbox. While the first course covered the physics of light, this module focuses on the practical equipment technicians use every day to build and maintain the network.
Precision is everything in fiber optics. This course provides hands-on knowledge of essential tools, including Fusion Splicers, Optical Power Meters (OPM), and Visual Fault Locators (VFL). A significant portion of the curriculum is dedicated to mastering the Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR)—teaching students to interpret traces, locate breaks, and understand backscattering principles to ensure network integrity.
Who Should Enroll:
- Fiber Technicians (Install/Repair)
- Splicing Technicians
- Field Engineers
- Anyone who has completed Fundamentals I
What You Will Learn
Upon completion, students will be able to select the right tool for the job, execute precise testing procedures, and analyze OTDR data to diagnose faults.
Core Competencies:
- OTDR Mastery: Explain the principles of backscattering and Fresnel reflections to interpret OTDR waveforms and locate fiber breaks.
- Testing Equipment: Describe the operation of Optical Power Meters (OPM) and Light Sources to measure transmit/receive power and attenuation.
- Safety & Handling: Identify laser light classifications and risks to prevent eye injury while using inspection scopes and VFLs.
- Fiber Identification: Use Optical Fiber Identifiers (OFI) to locate active fibers without disrupting service.
- Field Tools: Demonstrate knowledge of hand tools (strippers, shears, cleaning kits) and specialized equipment for Ribbon Fiber and Fusion Splicing.
