The NCTI® Fiber-Optic Fundamentals IV: Architectures course explores the critical components of fiber-optic networks, including passive optical networks (PON), and emerging technologies shaping the future of fiber communications. As fiber-optic networks continue to evolve, understanding network elements, topologies, and next-generation technologies is essential for ensuring efficient deployment and long-term scalability.

Fiber networks rely on key elements such as optical line terminals (OLT), optical network units (ONU), splitters, amplifiers, and wavelength division multiplexers. Understanding these elements is crucial for installation and maintenance. Technicians must understand how different network topologies affect performance, redundancy, and scalability. With the growing adoption of PON architectures, including GPON, XGS-PON, and NG-PON2, technicians must also grasp how these technologies enable high-speed broadband delivery.

In this course, students will learn the structure of fiber-optic networks, the role of essential components, how PON technology enables efficient, high-speed data transmission, and the principles of next-generation technologies. By the end, they will be equipped to work with various network architectures, understand their applications, and prepare for advancements in fiber-optic communication.

Delivery Options:

The course is delivered online. Lesson and final exams are taken online.

Completion Time:

The estimated completion time for this course is 4 hours. The maximum allotted time is four months from enrollment.

Recommended Prerequisite:

Fiber-Optic Foundations III: Splicing and Termination

Course Benefits

  • receive an industry-recognized NCTI certificate of graduation

Ideal For:

This course is suited for individuals to deepen their understanding of fiber-optic network architectures and the advanced technologies shaping modern, high-speed optical networks.

Upon completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain PON design considerations and elements, ODN elements, and fiber-optic cable categories in a PON.
  2. Describe PON considerations regarding attenuation in the network.
  3. Describe how OLTs, FDHs, splice closures, FATs, MSTs, ONUs, and ONTs operate in a PON.
  4. Identify and explain P2P and P2MP network topologies.
  5. Explain the structure and advantages of star, ring, bus, and mesh topologies.
  6. Explain the fundamental structure, advantages, and disadvantages of the centralized split, distributed split, distributed star, and home-run topologies.
  7. Describe PON access architecture characteristics and wavelength allocations.
  8. Describe the BPON wavelength allocation structure.
  9. Define GPON and explain its operation.
  10. Describe the difference between GPON and EPON.
  11. Describe NGA network architecture requirements.
  12. Describe point-to-point access architecture benefits.

Course Outline:

1. Fiber-Optic Network Elements and Topologies

PON design considerations, PON elements, common fiber-optic network topologies, and PON topologies

2. PON and Next-Generation Technologies
