Course Overview
The NCTI Fiber-Optic Installation II: Residential Installation course is the definitive training guide for the “Last Mile.” As fiber replaces copper in neighborhoods across the country, technicians need specific skills to bring that high-speed glass right to the customer’s living room.
This course covers the entire residential workflow: from running the Fiber Drop (Aerial or Underground) to installing the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and configuring the in-home network. Students will master the physical connection of fiber (splicing and termination) as well as the electrical side, learning to terminate Twisted-Pair (Cat5e/Cat6) cabling and RJ45 jacks to ensure the customer gets the full speed they paid for.
Who Should Enroll:
- FTTH/FTTP Installers
- Residential Technicians transitioning from Coax
- Contractors and Service Personnel
- Vocational Students
What You Will Learn
Upon completion, students will be able to install a complete residential fiber circuit, from the tap to the router, ensuring high-performance service delivery.
Core Competencies:
- Infrastructure Mastery: Trace the residential fiber path from the Outside Plant (OSP) to the Network Interface Device (NID) and indoor ONT/ONU.
- Drop Installation: Execute proper aerial clearances and direct burial methods, selecting the right conduit and bonding/grounding protocols.
- Splicing & Termination: Prepare, splice, and store optical fibers using slack trays. Distinguish between UPC and APC connectors to prevent signal loss.
- In-Home Wiring: Differentiate between loose tube and tight-buffered cables, and install pre-wired vs. post-wired fiber outlets.
- Data Networking: Terminate Twisted-Pair cables (UTP/STP) using RJ45 connections and TIA wiring schemes (T568A/B) to distribute data from the ONT to the end user.
Certification and Benefits
Deliver the Gigabit Experience
This course bridges the gap between the utility pole and the customer’s device, ensuring technicians can handle both the fiber and the ethernet wiring inside the home.
Additional Benefits:
- Industry Recognition: Receive the NCTI Certificate of Graduation.
- Troubleshooting Skills: Diagnose signal loss and configuration errors that commonly plague residential installs.
- Prerequisite: Builds on Fiber-Optic Installation I: Safety.
