These trucks are equipped with an extendable boom and a bucket that allows technicians to reach elevated work areas safely, often at heights that would otherwise require more complex and time-consuming access methods like scaffolding or ladders.

The Bucket Truck Essentials course is designed to equip students with the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary for the safe and efficient use of bucket trucks. This course covers key aspects such as understanding industry standards, performing thorough inspections, conducting routine maintenance, mastering safe operation techniques, and adhering to critical safety protocols. By understanding these aspects, technicians can maximize the efficiency and safety of bucket trucks in their day-to-day operations, maintaining telecommunication networks to the highest standards.

Upon completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. Recognize ANSI and OSHA’s roles in safety standards and explain the required training and roles for operating, maintaining, and ensuring safety with a bucket truck.

  2. Explain the operator’s responsibilities for the operating, parts, and maintenance manuals for their assigned bucket truck.

  3. Explain how a work vehicle’s appearance reflects professionalism and enhances customer perception.

  4. Identify emergency indicators, outline response actions, and explain how to prepare yourself and your vehicle for the workday.

  5. Perform tests and inspections per ANSI A92.2 standards, describe periodic maintenance for the aerial assembly, and identify insulated or non-insulated components on a bucket truck.

  6. Explain the process of certifying a bucket truck for operation after an incident.

  7. Explain how to maintain a safe following distance, describe the different types of driving distractions, and define distracted driving along with strategies to prevent it.

  8. Explain safe parking procedures and describe traffic control and channelization for indoor, outdoor, and active traffic work.

  9. Explain the importance of wearing PPE in the broadband industry and the difference between a fall arrest system and a fall restraint system.

  10. Describe electrical hazards, worker regulations, and the minimum approach distance with precautions for working near electrical lines.

  11. Explain safety tips and ground crew expectations when working with bucket trucks.

  12. Explain the purpose of a bucket truck, how to stabilize it, and the procedures to follow before and during boom extension.

  13. Explain how to control the aerial assembly, handle emergencies, and respond to operational failures.
