Littleton, CO-February 26, 2019-In our rapidly-advancing wireless world, it is still critical to support legacy subscriber services and the customers who use them. In rural communities especially, the need to provide focused training and education to installation professionals tasked with supporting these systems is crucial. To meet these needs, NCTI has launched a certification program to train on, or enhance, the skills of such professionals.
An NCTI-certified Telecom Specialist is skilled in the installation and troubleshooting of modern and legacy subscriber services over a copper pair network and fiber optic networks such as Passive Optical Networks (PON) and Fiber to the Premises (FTTP). The services include Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS), Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), Voice over IP (VoIP).
“As experienced telephone/DSL technicians retire, their replacements will need to be trained,” said Paul Eisbrener, Senior Director of Learning and Development for NCTI. “There are many of these small to mid-sized legacy systems in operation and it will be some time before they are replaced. Our crossover clients voiced their desire for technical training in the legacy telephone world, and we gladly delivered.”
Vice President of Operations for Oklahoma-based Hilliary Communications, Mike Rowell is excited to offer this level of training to employees and, in turn, provide a higher level of service to customers. “Hilliary Communications has acquired three ILECs since late 2016 and we are currently building an FTTH project in a CLEC market that will pass more than 8,000 homes. Now, more than ever we needed a way to ensure consistent training across the company. NCTI has helped us complement our field training with superior computer-based modules that are engaging to the employee and beneficial to the employee, company, and our customers,” Rowell said.
The courses required for certification include: Introduction to Telecom Operations, Telephone Home Wiring, Applying Wi-Fi Technologies, Fiber Installation and Activation, Fiber Testing and Maintenance, Introduction to Wide Area Networks, and Understanding Voice and Data Networks. Upon successful completion of all seven courses, students will receive an NCTI certificate of achievement and will have earned four college credits.
