Course Overview
The NCTI Fiber-Optic Construction II: Outside Plant Installation course takes the plans created in Course I and puts them into action. This module focuses exclusively on the heavy-duty methods required for Underground Fiber Deployment.
Installing cable below ground requires specialized machinery and strict adherence to safety protocols to avoid costly utility strikes. This course trains technicians on the operation of static and vibratory plows, chain trenchers, and Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) rigs. Students will also master Vacuum Excavation (Hydro-vac) techniques for safe digging near existing utilities and learn the critical steps for site restoration and soil compaction.
Who Should Enroll:
- OSP Construction Crews
- Heavy Equipment Operators (Telecom)
- Fiber Installers
- Safety Managers
What You Will Learn
Upon completion, students will be able to execute safe excavation, operate boring equipment, and restore job sites to industry standards.
Core Competencies:
- Excavation Safety: Interpret utility markings (811/One-Call), identify underground hazards, and implement Traffic Control plans for roadway work.
- Heavy Machinery: Demonstrate knowledge of Plowing (static/vibratory) and Trenching operations, including excavation angles and equipment controls.
- Boring Operations: Explain procedures for dry and fluid-assisted Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), including pilot hole drilling.
- Non-Destructive Digging: Apply Hydro-vac and Vacuum Excavation methods to safely expose buried utilities without damage.
- Installation Methods: Describe High Air Speed Blowing techniques for conduit cable placement and proper grounding/bonding protocols.
- Site Restoration: Perform backfilling, soil compaction, and landscaping restoration to ensure trench integrity and customer satisfaction.
Certification and Benefits
Build Safely and Efficiently
This course is the second step in the Fiber-Optic Construction series, moving from design to physical installation.
Additional Benefits:
- Industry Recognition: Receive the NCTI Certificate of Graduation.
- Risk Mitigation: deeply understand federal/state safety codes to prevent accidents and infrastructure damage.
- Prerequisite: Builds on Fiber-Optic Construction I: Outside Plant Design.
- Next Step: Prepares students for Fiber-Optic Construction III: Outside Plant Activation.
